I had a Zune (30Gb) for almost 2 years and it was a version 1.0 hardware and brown. Pretty chunky by today’s standard (a whopping 120Gb!).
But what is impressive :
- Hardware – It was robust (it survived my daily 2 hours commute and APAC travels), including the earphones which I can stick together via tiny magnets (a great thing when you want to listen to the Zune while making a phone call on the other ear). The music, video, radio and picture quality easily beat the Apple iPod IMHO.
- Firmware – My Zune may be old but the brain is the latest possible.
Version 3.0 (225)Version 3.1 (50)!!! with Bootloader 435 Grab it here ! Read more about the update here. More Games ! - Software – It took me 10 minutes to get used to the UI but what I like about it… is the marketplace.
See Wikipedia for Software/Firmware changes.
Here’s the review by CNet back in 14 Nov 2006 !
So what’s so good about it for non-US Geeks like me since it is only available for USA/Canada?
Psst. You can dump your own MP3, AAC, WMA, WMVs, MPEG4, H.264, ASF, JPEG, etc… into the Zune. You just cannot buy stuff from the marketplace outside of USA/Canada.
Ok, if you cannot buy stuff, what’s so good about it for non-US/CA geeks ?
Well that’s #4. Podcasts. I love the podcast feature which I can add free Audio and Video podcasts, including your very own RSS feeds which is not in the Marketplace (like The Guardian, Mr. Brown, Scientific American…) yet!.
Now I can listen or view the very latest on CNN, Discovery, HBO, Boing Boing, Anderson Cooper, Cringely and more while commuting or waiting for others !
With the Zune Firmware and Software updates, it just gets better and better!
What’s even nicer ? Price Cuts !
Yeah !

http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/microsoft-revamps-zune-pass-keep-ten-tracks-per-month-forever-a/
Microsoft has just announced that, beginning today, Zune Pass users will be able to select ten tracks per month to keep forever (and ever, and ever), and the $14.99 monthly subscription rate isn’t headed up. Agreements have been miraculously nailed down between Microsoft and EMI Music, Sony BMG Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, not to mention a number of independent distributors. We must say, we certainly appreciate the gesture here, but is it enough to make fencesitters buy in? What say you?

Does it have touch screen or ability to install third party applications? How about a web browser?
I don’t want to carry around more than one device at any one time, so unfortunately the best “integrated” device experience right now is still the iPhone.
The day when the Zune OS merges with Windows Mobile and we see a multi-functional device from Microsoft is when the Zune will really become an attractive alternative to the iPhone or iPod Touch.
However, it’s not there yet.

Nope. Not yet.
If I want to, I could use my Windows Mobile 6.1 like a Zune, install 3rd party applications and use the web browser. No problems… but why ?
It all depends on how integrated you want your mobile experience to be. Is a 6 function Swiss Knife enough for you or would you need a 80 function Victorinox SwissChamp ?
Why I use the Zune instead of my HTC TYTN II ? For practical reasons.
1. I save on battery usage of my phone which is more critical.
2. My Zune has more capacity for Multimedia than any SD Card.
So how much capacity does your iPhone have ? How long can your battery last without using iPod Touch for Multimedia?
By the way, I was at Yahoo’s BOSS event when a student showed off his iPod Touch, sadly his device cannot connect to Yahoo’s WIFI whereas my Windows Mobile can. So much for best “integrated” device experience…
Please don’t get me started on iPhone issues with Security Flaws, Lack of Dynamic GPS/Cut & Paste/MicroSD Support, etc…

Dropped Calls is a favorite of my iPhone friends apparently.
Oh wait, Apple Music has a differentiator! DRM !DRM !DRM ! [November 20, 2008 ]

In short, Zune OS do not need to merge with Windows Mobile as each has its own purpose.
