I was at VMWare’s offices in Singapore last week and spent some time having a brain dump on their technology and asked quite a few questions and got a lot of valuable insight into their technology.
You can see the nice view of their offices at Suntec here (I happen to drop by Yahoo for some discussions and lunch too).
I am glad to see VMWare benefiting from the growth of Microsoft Exchange and the demise of Lotus Notes. Sadly… details are private.
Lots of integration questions are asked and VMWare assured the audience that they themselves are on Microsoft Exchange and using the very same design themselves.
In fact, read this. 16,000 Exchange Mailboxes, 1 Server
A lot of questions are asked on the topic but only 1 brave soul asked about running Lotus Notes on VMWare. Then came the generic answer…yes. in theory there should be no problems. Why ? Because IBM apparently is not too friendly to VMWare.
“When a customer calls in with a standard usage or defect-related service request, and indicates that they are running on VMware ESX Server, IBM Technical Support will make best efforts to resolve the problem.” Apparently best efforts does not translate to full resolution of any Lotus Notes issues…
Then there was Microsoft. The company “Microsoft” was mentioned several times and that VMWare is now very happy with the recent change in events that “VMware joins Microsoft support scheme“.
Many in the audience are obviously happy with both VMWare and Microsoft, they can get more value out of any existing and future relationships. Nice to see VMWare encouraging the audience to convert to Microsoft Exchange 2007 now!
No doubt the event ended on the high note, with many of the morning session audience coming back for more at 2pm. I guess the fantastic pantry with lots of food and drinks do help.
